Remedies for constipation

No one likes to be constipated it's one of the most frustrating and uncomfortable

feelings.  While it's not normally very painful, being constipated for a long

period is for some reason very unsettling for me.  Probably because it is also a

symptom of more serious conditions, such as colon cancer, or other serious lower

intestinal issues.  But even beyond that, there's just something unnatural and

worrisome about even just normal, everyday constipation.  Fortunately, there are

plenty of remedies for constipation, and plenty of things you can do to avoid it

from happening in the first place.

The best remedies for constipation to try first are of course foods high in fiber.

And lots of them!  A bowl of oatmeal is a good start, but a bowl of oatmeal,

several pieces of fruit, and a bran muffin is even better.  Constipation for most

people is just a sign that you haven't been getting enough fiber, and so boosting

your fiber intake will serve as a natural and healthy treatment.  Not only are high

fiber foods great remedies for constipation, they will help lower your cholesterol,

your blood pressure, and reduce your chances of getting colon cancer as well.

I'm not really sure why makes of oatmeal and other exceptionally high fiber foods

don't tout these facts more often.  Considering all the great effects of fiber,

you'd think they'd use that to their advantage.  I think constipation and issues

related to fiber are something of a taboo subject in the United States.  Maybe

that's why we get so much colon cancer here?

Anyway, if you have already tried fiber as a remedy for constipation and it hasn't

really paid off as well as you'd like, you'll have to step it up a notch and try

some laxatives.  I've had mixed results with these, but they all seem to work at

least moderately well.  Just don't take aloe based laxatives.  Yes, I know, aloe is

an all natural remedy for constipation and so on and so forth, but it also happens

to be very harsh and has lots of side effects.  In addition, aloe hasn't really

been studied that well for use internally, and it could have unforeseen adverse

affects.

If you find that you are eating plenty of fiber, and are still using laxatives as a

remedy for constipation on a regular basis, it's a good idea to see a doctor.  In

fact, it's never really a bad idea to see a doctor, especially when your bowels are

concerned.
